Long ago, our ancestors were faced with various challenges. Through determination and a dedication to the long-held belief that a Ranger is first and foremost self-sufficient, they overcame many hardships. In the beginning, the forest was an isolated wilderness full of potential dangers. The ability to summons a fallen soul was a skill unknown to most. Though many were clad only in leather and did not have the weapons some take for granted today, they endured and rose above the perils. Determined to establish a place where they could strive for higher ideals far away from the many distractions of the cities, the well-worn paths we all use now were forged by their daring efforts. Finding the great Redwood was the beginning of the Guild we cherish. Setting very high standards for themselves, they learned to thrive in the shadows of the forest, surpassing others in awareness of their surroundings and survival skills. Many a Ranger lost their life in safeguarding the secrets they had uncovered. Their sacrifices, traditions and strength are the foundation for many of the beliefs we strive to uphold. The Period of Solitude is a voluntary program for current Guild members. We have undergone changes over the years, much of which was needed. This individual challenge, however, is intended to provide an opportunity for present-day Rangers to experience firsthand some of the character-building hardships so bravely faced by those who have gone before us. It is designed to be physically and mentally rigorous, but ultimately rewarding to any that survive it. Those who succeed will have the privilege of experiencing the very roots of Ranger pride. 1) The Ranger will first schedule a start date with a Guild Officer, who will post an announcement on the message board. A maximum of two per week will be permitted. A title of "Solitary Ranger" will be granted. 2) A minimum of seven earth days will be spent isolated from others, unable to hear or talk with anyone. You may take longer than seven days if you wish. During this time, you will spend at least five hours on this effort. The amount of time you put into it will be monitored. 3) Stepping within city bounds is not permitted; this includes villages. You must travel by foot and remain in the wilderness, finding other ways to travel beyond the nearby forest. You are expected to destroy any type of recall rings that you may have. Any return to the Redwood will be done only in dire need, after determining that the odds against your survival are to great. You are not permitted any interaction in shops. Such returns should be few, if any, and followed by a prompt return to solitude. 4) You will rely upon your own skills, spells, and knowledge. 5) At least three journal entries documenting your progress will be made and shared with Guild members via the message board. At the end of your period, you will provide an overview explaining what you have learned, your trials and tribulations. 6) Upon an unfortunate mishap, you are permitted only one request to fellow Guild members for a rescue attempt. Clues may be given via no more than two gshouts. You may not allow them to summons you. You will visit Naria rather than seeking any other resurrection. 7) Participants are expected to guildtithe 75% if able. 8) If an obvious and intentional violation is identified, your period will end and you will not be eligible to retry for five IC years. 9) It is optional, but suggested that you wear only leather, steel or self-crafted armour, and/or limit yourself to the use of certain weapons such as a long bow or sword, ranger bow, dark web bow, etc. 10) You may map a particular area of interest if desired, but this is not required. |
